What I like to do: In my spare time, I play soccer, compete in track meets, turn wood, or do something that has to do with Star Trek. I love to spend time with my family. I like to go camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting. Life for me is fairly simple, but that's the way I like it. I like coaching soccer and volleyball. I'd coach track too, but most states seasons place track and soccer together. Soccer and volleyball are team sports, and team sports build more character than an individual sport like track. I used to run the 100m, 200m, 400m, 400IH, the 4x100m relay, and throw the javelin. I still like to do them when I have a chance. I love astronomy and physics. They fascinate me. There's so many things that depend on physics (like, practically everything). I'm a Star Trek and Doctor Who fan as well... Educational Editorial: This is not an "Educational Philosophy." That would sound somewhat more philosophical. This is definitely an editorial, and it sounds like one, too... I am convinced that everyone in the world can learn math. I am also convinced, however, that there are many people in the world who choose not to learn anything, no matter how useful the information may be. I have not been teaching as many years as several of my colleagues, but I have already figured out that even if I stick the pencil into a student's hand and guide his or her wrist through the motions, they still will not do the work on their own. Unfortunately, there are some humans on this little blue-green planet that will take longer to learn life's lessons than it will take others. The more motivated a student tends to be, the sooner they "figure it out" and the better off they are. However, it's these un-motivated students that think us "old folks" can't understand their lives and that we've never been through what they're going through. Somehow, "I'll just never understand." Yeah, right... that's why we keep repeating history and never learning from it... However, if we would start swallowing our own pride, throwing away our own ignornace, and stop making excuses for our own laziness, there are so many things we could accomplish! Education is something that should be valued! Why is it that the USA offers 13 years of free education and so many students throw it away? I don't understand that... If we valued education, if we valued hard work, and if we valued life and liberty, then each and every one of us would be better people. I'm trying my hardest to be "a little better every day," but I just don't see much potential from society as a whole... Yes, I'm a realist. |
